Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Although no type of liposuction is a substitute for diet and exercise, liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don't respond to traditional weight-loss methods. Often times it is referred to as liposculpture, lipoplasty or suction lipectomy.


The first consultation

Procedure
Liposuction consists, basically, in the suction of the fat deposits by means of very thin cannulas.
The volume of fat that can be extracted in a session depends, mainly, on the quality of the skin and its capacity of retraction usually related the zone of the body to be treated.
Very important volumes of fat can be obtained throughout several sessions. Several sessions allows a better recovery of the skin if the volumes are very important. However, in the great majority of the cases, an only session is sufficient.

The intervention is made with very fine cannulas, reason why the scars that are of between 3 and 4 millimeters are inappreciable to the few weeks.

Extensive surgery was usually required to remove stubborn fatty deposits; however, in the early 1980s, dermatologic surgeons pioneered liposuction techniques and developed tumescent liposuction which changed surgical fat removal completely.

The Tumescent Technique
With tumescent liposuction, one or more small incisions may be made. Because of this, less invasive micro-cannulas can be used. Furthermore, the newer tumescent liposuction technique and the micro-cannulas allow for a more gradual, targeted, and metered treatment, and a more gradual and controlled removal of fat. This enables the surgeon to contour the area more effectively.


Tumescent liposuction provides several advantages over the original liposuction:
• Using local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia eliminates nausea
  and other general-anesthesia-related side effects.
• The recovery time is shorter.
• There is less blood and fluid loss.
• Use of antibacterial lidocaine may reduce the chance of infection.
• Intravenous fluid replacement is not necessary.
• The swelling or tumescence of the fatty deposits amplifies the targeted
    areas for liposuction, thus reducing the risk of a secondary procedure.
• The new cannula design with tumescent liposuction reduces bruising
   and swelling after surgery.
• Smaller incisions result in less scarring.


The Tumescent Liposuction Procedure
Cannulas have now been miniaturized so that they can be inserted through much smaller openings in the skin. A number of small holes may be placed in the skin around the treated area (instead of few larger holes. The cannulas are inserted through these small openings and the fat is removed.
The term "tumescent" means swollen and firm, which is how this technique prepares the fatty tissue for removal. A solution of lidocaine (a local anesthetic) is injected into the fatty area along with a solution to constrict the blood vessels (typically epinephrine). The lidocaine is absorbed by the fatty tissue and causes the tissues to become swollen and firm. A large area of fatty tissue can be numbed using this technique, allowing for a large area of liposuction to be performed while the patient is under local anesthesia.
The epinephrine causes the blood vessels to constrict or shrink in the area of the procedure, which has a number of advantages. The vasoconstriction limits blood loss during the procedure and provides for a longer-lasting numbing effect, because there is less blood flow to carry the lidocaine away from the area of the procedure.

How long is the patient hospitalized?
For liposuction one day of hospitalization is usually needed if there are no complications.


After Your Procedure
The recovery is very fast and the postoperative period is usually well tolerated, since the annoyances caused by the intervention are not important.

Most of patients can return to normal tasks after one week. Even so, the surgeon will recommend not making activities that require physical effort during the first weeks after the operation.

However, in the later weeks to the intervention, the treated zone undergoes a certain inflammation, that it is reduced gradually, to disappear completely between the third and sixth month.

The first postoperative month you must use a compressive elastic garment and massages, in order to help in the process of natural recovery of the skin.
