ETHNIC
RHINOPLASTY
Everyone's nose is different,
but there are some common characteristics in different races.
Cosmetic surgery appeals to people of all different ethnicities
and backgrounds. In fact, ethnic plastic surgery is on the rise,
and ethnic rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently requested
cosmetic procedures among African-Americans, Asians and
Hispanic-Americans.
In previous decades, the goal of ethnic rhinoplasty was to
create more westernized noses, but times have changed. Today
most individuals want to keep their ethnicity, and opt instead
for subtle cosmetic enhancements.
There are tremendous differences among different ethnic groups,
and there are significant variations within the same ethnic
group of patients.
Caucasian: Anglo Saxon, Germanic, Latin (Greek, Roman,
French), Slavic,
Mediterranean
African American
Asian: North American, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino
Middle Eastern: Persian/Iranian, Arab, Indian, Pakistani
Hispanic: Castilian, Mexican American, Mestizo
AFRICAN AMERICAN RHINOPLASTY
The term "African American rhinoplasty" does not adequately
reflect the significant diversity of nasal types that are often
found within this population.
The African American population comes from a wide background of
countries and geographic regions of the world. Patients' noses
and their overall appearance often reflect this multicultural
history.
However, most African American patients seeking rhinoplasty want
a generalized narrowing of the nose, with more tip definition
and a narrower bridge. Included in this is usually narrowing of
the nostrils.
Due to the fact that African American patients often have
thicker skin and small or thin cartilage components, different
types of grafts are usually required in order to provide
strength and definition to the nose. This technique is generally
referred to as Augmentation Rhinoplasty and may include grafts
to the nasal tip, the bridge of the nose, and the base of the
nose. These techniques are also used in non-African American
operations with great success.
With that in mind, most patients want a natural result that
retains the essence of their ethnicity and pre-operative
appearance. The balance between a patient's aesthetic desires
and the increasing complexity of the maneuvers required to
achieve a certain result is the most important decision that
both the surgeon and patient need to make.
All about African american rhinoplasty features
African American nose to our average Caucasian nose, we find
that our
African American patients tend to have:
Wider nasal bridges
Lower nasal bridges
Thicker skin
Wider, more bulbous nasal tips
Thicker soft tissue overlying the nasal tip
Softer cartilage
Nasal tips that appears to droop
Shorter nasal tips
Wider variability in nostril shape
Greater nostril flare (bigger nostril curvature)
People with darker skin tend to have more noticeable scarring.
This can be very important in ethnic plastic surgery. We use
special approaches to our wound closure in procedures for ethnic
patients to avoid unsightly scarring and to preserve even skin
tone. This includes fewer stitches near the surface of the wound
so as not to create scarring in this type of skin, and
aggressive wound management following your surgery to minimize
the development of thick and raised scars.
ASIAN RHINOPLASTY
In America, nose jobs are consistently among the top three
cosmetic surgeries requested by the Asian population. There are
different requirements typical to Caucasian and non-Caucasian
rhinoplasty. For instance, whereas many Caucasians seek to
reduce the size of their nose, Asians characteristically request
augmentation of the nose.
Asian noses are generally wider and flatter than a Roman nose.
Therefore, nose jobs to increase the projection of the nose are
common among this ethnic group. This is achievable through the
insertion of implants. In order to achieve a natural looking
nose which does not conflict with the ethnicity of the face, the
surgeon will generally confine the implant to the bridge of the
nose while leaving the tip unchanged. Implants are often made
from silicone, which has been used for this cosmetic procedure
for over 50 years and has proved very safe.
Surgery to narrow the appearance of the nostrils is also
frequently requested by Asian patients. This will result in
scarring, but in most patients the scarring will fade and become
unnoticeable. If the patient feels their nose in general is too
wide, the bones can be broken and reset to narrow the appearance
of the nose. This can simultaneously achieve nasal projection
without the use of implants, if desired. Increasing the tip of
the nose can also be accomplished through using natural tissue,
such as tissue removed from the inside of the septum (inner
nose), as an implant. This is preferred by many surgeons to
using artificial implants as the incidence of rejections is much
lower.
The goals of the surgery should be a natural result that is
harmonious with the face.
